El Mercurio de Valparaíso, published on September 12, 1827, is the oldest newspaper in uninterrupted circulation in Chile and the world in the Spanish language.

It was founded on September 12, 1827, in Valparaíso, Chile.

In its beginnings, El Mercurio de Valparaíso appeared only on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

There was no permanent team of editors; the newspaper was fed by the contributions of the founder and friends invited to write.

This type of newspaper had a very low circulation, a fact that derived from the scarcity of paper and inks.

For the readers, the problem was solved with the following practice: a neighbor who could read would buy a copy of the newspaper and read it in public during the gatherings.

It was not until May 5, 1829, that El Mercurio de Valparaíso began its daily editions.
